Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

Outside of old building
Elizabeth Gaskells House

Offering a brilliant day out, there’s plenty for young and old to enjoy at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. Take a day trip to find out more about the writer, Elizabeth Gaskell and her family.

Sitting just one mile from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the house has charming rooms and a Victorian-style garden to explore. Offering a full calendar of events, there’s always a friendly volunteer on hand to help you too. There’s also a Tea Room for visitors to enjoy and a second-hand book sale every second Sunday of the month.

Be inspired by the storytelling and the atmosphere of this historic house. Have a look at the books in William Gaskell’s study, take a seat in the drawing-room and ring the servant’s bell.

Get creative with the activity baskets and dressing up box, and sit where Elizabeth sat to write her books. There are also family trails and craft activities throughout the school holidays. Everyone is encouraged to get hands-on, few objects are out of bounds, and there’s plenty of places to rest weary legs too.
