Christmas in Manchester

Christmas in Manchester may be a little different this year, but after a tricky year for most – we could all do with some festive cheer.

Many of the popular Christmas shows, pantomimes and events have been cancelled. However, there are still many other ways to celebrate and get into the Christmas spirit. You can rest assured that many of the events have been specially designed around social distancing rules too. With outdoor light trails, community activities and many online events, there’s still lots for everyone to enjoy.

Although there isn’t going to be a public Christmas Lights Switch On in the city centre this year – Manchester lights will still sparkle and shine. Giant Santa will return to light up Piccadilly Gardens alongside an impressive light trail of sculptures throughout the city. The switch-on will take place on 17 November and will be broadcast on BBC Radio Manchester and live-streamed on social media for people to enjoy at home.

For those looking to escape the mayhem of Christmas, there’s sanctuary to be found in one of the many parks and green spaces outside of the city centre too.
