The theatre scene in Manchester offers everything from award-winning musicals and Shakespeare’s comedies to contemporary live performance and world-class ballet. 

Hosting a variety of theatre festivals throughout the year, Manchester is world-renowned for the biennial Manchester International Festival, a celebration of original new work from the most groundbreaking artists.

The city has a wealth of striking theatres and performance spaces – many with rich histories – from the Royal Exchange’s iconic in-the-round stage to vast industrial canvasses like Mayfield. Newer theatres on the scene include all-round culture hub, HOME and Hope Mill Theatre in Ancoats. The city also boasts a lively fringe scene too which peaks in July with the city-wide and highly regarded Manchester Fringe Festival.

Royal Exchange Theatre

The Royal Exchange has reopened to the public for performances only. Tickets for theatre shows must be booked online in advance. For performances, the building will open one hour before the scheduled start time.
