Family friendly

An elderly woman with short brown hair leans against a rock on Jeju Island, south of the Korean peninsula. Looking at the viewer with a neutral expression, she wears a long sleeved blouse with a floral pattern and is holding a long white cloth.

Jane Jin Kaisen is an artist and filmmaker who was born on Jeju Island, South Korea and now lives in Denmark. Halmang is the title of her first UK solo exhibition of artwork.

Presented at esea contemporary, which was once a wholesale fish market, this collection of artwork connects the historic Manchester market building with the artist’s heritage in South Korea, where her mother and grandmother earned a living as female sea divers who collected seafood from the ocean.

You can see this striking exhibition at esea contemporary from 20 January until 21 April 2024.

Additionally, join esea contemporary in celebrating the opening of Jane Jin Kaisen’s first UK solo show on Friday 19 January 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Free entry, book here.
