Head to The Portico Library this summer to see some wonderful work by celebrated Brazilian artist Maria Nepomuceno.

Joyful and brightly coloured, the artwork will welcome people back to the city centre and also into the beautiful Portico Library.

Maria Nepomuceno uses a variety of different techniques to create her work. She also uses natural materials such as rope, beads and straw.

Visitors to the library will be invited to create drawings of themselves and their friends enjoying the artwork. These drawings will then be added to the collection. What a cheerful way to enjoy art with others across Manchester.

One of Manchester’s longest-running organisations and oldest buildings still fulfilling its original function, The Portico Library first opened in 1806 and remains in its purpose-built venue in the heart of the city centre. Open, free, to the public five days a week, it is home to a collaborative programme of exhibitions and events with the region’s diverse communities that complements and contextualises its unique collection of books, archives and illustrations spanning over 450 years. Having become a registered charity in 2017, the Library is now at a uniquely exciting stage in its history. As well as coinciding with the city’s flagship return-to-culture event, Manchester International Festival, Maria’s exhibition, Refloresta! (Reforest!) will mark the start of an ambitious development process to reimagine the Library’s future. Building on several years of recent community partnerships and collaborations and the Portico’s central role in Manchester’s history, the Library is now shaping an ambitious vision for its future as an accessible and innovative centre of learning, history, arts, and culture for all the people of the city and beyond. Maria Nepomuceno was born in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, where she continues to live and work. Venues for recent solo presentations include Sikkema Jenkins & Co., New York (2018); A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2018); Stavanger Art Museum (2017); Barbican Centre, London (2016); Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro (2013); Turner Contemporary, Margate (2012); Magasin 3, Konsthall, Stockholm (2010); Galeria Karsten Greve, Cologne (2009); Steve Turner Contemporary Gallery, Los Angeles (2009) and Paço das Arte, São Paulo (2008).
